Summary

Meeting with Fernando Toral (CIEMAT) and Ernesto De Matteis (INFN-LASA) about the test of the IFAST magnet at the FREIA-MTF, following the request mentioned in 2026-10-01 - NbTi Sextupole magnet preliminary specifications. The magnet has no iron, a low inductance (< 100 mH) and a nominal current of about 1.5–1.6 kA. Protection will rely on an energy extraction system and the uQDS, whose setup still has to be clarified with CERN. Testing in summer 2027 is fine for CIEMAT.

Several parameters are still missing (see open points).

Protection and quench detection

  • Energy extraction: 300 mΩ dump resistor, giving about 0.5 kV.
  • Double-check the dump resistor in FREIA: to be checked our varistor during the test of the test magnet (sextupole) sent from LASA.
  • 13 splices, all to be monitored.
  • 28 voltage taps in total.
  • uQDS: explicitly mentioned as a protection system. Ask Jens Steckert (CERN) about the uQDS.

Cooldown and cryogenics

  • Slow cooldown required but no specific numbers were provided

Mechanics and logistics

  • Weight 300 kg (no iron).
  • Support structure easy to be manufactured and most of it is already there.
  • Dimensions and shipping details missing.
